Slasher
(Curtis, 2002)
™ and © Curtis
While we’re all waiting for CSI: The Comic Book, here’s a Korean entry in that hot new genre, forensic science fiction. (Who saw that coming?) But don’t expect a lot of high-tech toys and bullet point-of-view shots from Slasher, which is obviously inspired by Silence of the Lambs as filtered through gory Hong Kong serial killer movies.
Although the storytelling is crystal clear, this Curtis comic book starts with what the others desperately need: a two-page “Character File” that introduces readers to the main characters, Violent Crime Unit officer Sia Lee and elegant master serial killer Jay Kang (both of whom bear more than a slight resemblance to Clarice and Dr. Lector). But what gives their relationship dynamic an extra frisson is that Lee was once a student of the former criminal psychologist. Sharp art, compelling story — this is solid stuff.
— S.A. Bennett
