Mr. Monster’s Weird Tales of the Future

    (Eclipse, 1987)
™ and ©1987 Michael T. Gilbert and Monte Wolverton

Michael T. Gilbert’s quirky creation, Mr. Monster is again used to introduce a collection of stories from the 1950s in this, the eighth title in a series of Mr. Monster’s Super Duper Specials.

Basil Wolverton is the featured creator in this issue and Gilbert’s unapologetic love for Wolverton’s style is apparent. Basil Wolverton excelled at illustrating bizarre and grotesque creatures and was a significant influence on underground comics artists in the 1960s. However in this cynical age his monsters often appear equally absurd and frightening. The contradiction is not too far-fetched since Wolverton also was a master caricaturist and humor artist. In addition, Wolverton wrote the stories featured here which are imbued with the 1950s sense of paranoia about the unknown. Recolored and printed on higher quality paper, this series from Eclipse endeavored to expose a past master to a new generation of fans.
