Supercar (Misc. Mayhem)

You know we’re in the middle of some kind of weird nostalgia wallow when someone decides to do a comic book based on a British puppet show from 1961, last seen here being mocked on a young, strapped-for-content Comedy Central.

But the idea of a flying car is still rich with wish-fulfillment that should appeal to kids today, on the off-chance a copy actually finds its way into the hands of someone under 45. For those who missed the program both times, #0 includes a nice introductory article and the first part of an episode guide. The plot is simple enough: Square-jawed Mike Mercury, fluttery Dr. Beaker, Jimmy, and monkey Mitch continue their never-ending “test” drive of Supercar, while Masterspy (a Sydney Greenstreet-sized variant of The Hood from Thunderbirds) is obsessed with acquiring it.

It’s slight but all in good fun until the end, when Mike swears to kill Masterspy to avenge the death … of the monkey. It just seems too much of a Dark Knight Returns moment for a comic book about a flying car.
