Ripley’s Believe It or Not!: Child Prodigies
(Schanes, 1993)
™ and ©1993 Ripley Entertainment Inc. Published by Schanes Products
Ripley’s Believe It or Not! has for years brought readers astonishing facts about weird and uncanny real events. Originally published in a collection of illustrated paperbacks, it is not so surprising that the best of the lot should make its way into comic book form. This happened several times, most notably in the Gold Key series of the early ’70s. Now, Steve Schanes (one of the founders of Pacific Comics) brings the books into the modern day.
One of several related series, the Child Prodigies title gives us stories about various incredible children throughout history. Here you’ll learn about John Stuart Mill, who learned Greek at age 3, studied Plato’s Dialogues at 7, and taught his sister Latin when he was 8. Also Ung-Yong Kim of Seoul, South Korea who could solve integral problems based on the theory of relativity at age 4. This title may not do much for your sense of accomplishment, but it’s guaranteed to be both entertaining and enlightening.
