Until the Full Moon
(Broccoli, 2004)
™ and © Broccoli
Read right to left; black and white series.
Under the light of a full moon, the centuries–old half–vampire, half–werewolf Marlo turns into a girl. His vampire friend David has always been interested in him as more than a friend, so, taking this in stride, Marlo’s father (who desperately wants an heir) arranges a marriage between them. It’s a dizzyingly high concept with a lot of potential, but it would have been better served by jettisoning the assorted supernatural aspects and focusing on the characters and their transgender romance. David, a supposed womanizer, likes Marlo when he’s either gender and isn’t afraid to show it. And after a certain amount of resistance. Marlo grudgingly comes to terms with being both a woman and in love with his best friend. Yet David keeps pressing Marlo to express his love when he’s a man. This is intriguing stuff but, unfortunately, the art doesn’t live up to it. It’s more than a bit cramped, preferring lots of little panels that don’t give the story room to breathe or do justice to all the pretty, pretty boys.
