Ah, “What If…?” This second series of the popular comic follows up on many of the variations on that popular theme. How would life be different if this had not happened, or had happened differently?

For instance, if Frank Castle had stopped a few steps shorter in retrieving his child’s lost kite in Central Park, the gang there might never have seen him—and as a result never killed his family. If so, would we have had a Punisher today? And if not, how would the world be different?

And what changes might have occurred if the Avengers had won the Evolutionary War? Would the High Evolutionary have succeeded in affecting the evolution of mankind? And if so, what effect would such a massive change have had on the universe?

The creators of these interesting alternate-universe tales from a simpler time could barely keep the rules straight!

No cosmic law requires that Peter Parker be Spider-Man. From what event did the Marvel Bullpen as FF diverge? The 1950s Avengers are ostensibly an “untold tale.”

Still, they’re fun to read and they’re placed in context by the letters pages. Some suggestions from readers actually became stories, including “What If Rick Jones Had Become The Hulk?” and “What If Gwen Stacy Hadn’t Died?” Other suggestions, such as “What If The Avengers and The Fantastic Four Merged into One Big Super-Team?” showed that the readers also didn’t quite get the ground rules. And we’re left to ponder, “What If a Human Being Fell into Howard the Duck’s world?”

Most telling is what’s not in here: Conan. Following reprints of #7, #9, #10, #11, and #12, readers are teased with the promise of a long-delayed Conan story. Finally appearing in #13, it didn’t make the cut for this volume, so you know exactly how fans felt in 1977.
