Grip: The Strange World of Men
(Vertigo, 2002)
™ and ©2002 Gilbert Hernandez
Created, written and illustrated by one half of the famous Los Hermanas Hernandez, Grip is an interesting and unique look into the world of relationships, amnesia, conspiracies and “living skins.” Gilbert Hernandez, an indy comix legend, half responsible for the classic and much adored Love and Rockets, fills this story with the same type of irreverent characters that populate his better known cannon of work. Pete just woke up in the middle of the street with a lipstick kiss-stain on his cheek. He’s wearing someone else’s suit with that someone’s wallet in his pocket. He doesn’t remember a thing and apparently his “own” skin is preventing him from going to anyone who might be able to help him. Bizarre, a bit creepy and filled with eye opening pop art, the opening chapter sets up a mystery that leaves the reader begging for more.
