A Treasury of Victorian Murder

    (NBM, 1999)
™ and © Rick Geary

A superbly drawn and written period piece, this novel chronicles three well-publicized (and sensationalized) 19th century murders. Geary’s attention to detail is exquisite. He authentically and convincingly captures the look of Victorian Scotland and New York, but it’s the kind of detail that doesn’t force the reader to dig out a magnifying glass. His clean, precise line work gives the art a unique flair that’s perfectly matched to a story set in this time period.

The narrative style of the writing also complements the art, and few writers are typically able to tell stories of this length in this manner and keep them interesting. Geary succeeds, proving that NBM was wise to bring this book out of hibernation. The three stories give the perfect introduction to readers unfamiliar with Geary’s style and whet the appetite for the four subsequent volumes, which are all full-length stories.

With such an accessible approach, there are few who wouldn’t enjoy this book.
