Bow Wow Wata

The bond between man and dog is the nucleus of veterinarian Umekawa Kazumi’s uplifting series. Instead of just showing a generic boy–canine friendship, Kazumi actually probes the minds of the book’s animal stars, showing that they have thoughts and feelings, too. The dog protagonist Wata belongs to high school student Yashiro Tasuke, who seems to always have animals entering his life. The point that Kazumi is trying to get across is that animals aren’t too different from each other, and the creator effectively makes the animal stars in the book somehow relatable. Bow Wow Wata is a radical departure from most imported manga in the U.S. market.
