In its former incarnation, The Wizard was one of the earliest British comic series, running from 1922 up until 1963, when it was merged into the British comic “Rover.” It reemerged as a new title in 1970, continuing its run of sports, fantasy, war, and adventure stories. Its rock-bottom price was matched by its production qualities—printed on newsprint with black-and-white interior pages.

Although it often appeared more like a newspaper supplement than an American-style comic book, it served as a useful practice ground for several key comic artists including Brian Bolland (Batman: The Killing Joke, Animal Man), Dave Gibbons (Watchmen), and Carlos Ezquerra (2000 A.D.).
