Revolving Hammer
(Cyberosia, 2002)
™ and © Cyberosia Publishing
Many indy anthologies are hit-and-miss propositions, often with far more misses. Good newer talent is often hard to find, and many inexperienced editors often cannot tell the good from the bad.
Not so with Revolving Hammer. Editors Kristen Bevilacqua and Scott Brown definitely have the eyes for promising newcomers and have managed to fill 80 pages with good-to-excellent stories and nary a clunker in the bunch.
The theme of the collection is the uglier side of human nature, and every story delivers. Scott J. Grunewald’s “Le Gout du Sexe” is a grossly disturbing yet erotic piece about a future where no one’s sexual fetishes are beyond furnishing. Marc Bryant and Malcolm Jones’ “Date Night” is the story of an odd young man who gives new meaning to the idea of holding hands. And “To Whom It May Concern” from Andrew Foley and Wendi Strang-Frost is a story about a barkeeper who would rather destroy that which he loves than see it change.
It’s not a perfect collection; some of the artists need to hone their skills a bit, and some of the less-then-excellent stories could have been better with a little tighter writing. But this remains a fine example of what an independent anthology should be.
