Weapon X: The Draft—Marrow
(Marvel, 2002)
™ and ©2002 Marvel Characters, Inc.
The Weapon X Program—the Canadian project that unleashed Wolverine and Alpha Flight on an unsuspecting Marvel Universe—is back in business and bent on proving to the world that “[m]utants can be utilized for mankind’s benefit.” Serving as lead-ins to the ongoing Weapon X (Vol. 2) series, five one-shots hit the comics shops in the fall of 2002 and chronicled the formation of the new team as it recruited and tested those who would fill out its ranks.
This one-shot starring former X-Men member Marrow is a departure from the recruitment storyline of the previous Weapon X one-shots. This tale—by writer Christina Z (Witchblade) and artist Brandon Badeaux (Adventures of Superman)—explores Marrow’s insecurities, most of which stem from her mutation, which involves bony protruberances that she can break off and use as weapons. The Director of Weapon X gives Marrow a normal appearance, the ability to control her bone-growth, and a moral dilemma: in exchange for something approaching normalcy, he asks her for an assassination. Forcing Marrow into a crisis of conscience will keep her under the Director’s thumb and provide some points of characterization for the ongoing series.
