Pink Riot

Many comics are autobiographical in nature, but few of these are as honest, wacky, and downright psychotic as Pink Riot. Pink Riot tells the tale of the lives of the writers and artists of Riot Ink, three female Canadian self-admitted freaks and outcasts. Needless to say, this is an unusual perspective in comics, and it shows.

Drenn, Quinn, and Dragon Lady—whether these are nicknames, noms de plume, or actual names on birth certificates is never specified—regale us with short tales of current lives, as well as their high-school days growing up different in the wilds of Canada. From the stories, it is amazing these Goth chicks ever survived to publish their first comic book, let alone three series! From Goth cow-tipping to bunny-suit rampages, these three get caught in all sorts of strange adventures.

The art is, like its subject matter, different and wacky, yet expressive. The art and the stories make readers think perhaps the prescription drugs the authors mention so prominently aren’t doing their job. You’ll be glad they aren’t.
