Maria de Guzman was a young woman who traveled from Brazil to study at the university at Elm Harbor, Michigan. As soon as she arrived, however, she began having strange dreams. In them, she was a fierce creature who stalked through the woods and preyed on soldiers and evildoers. The dreams terrified Maria, but it was not long before she would be living them.

Feeling restless one night, she decided to go jogging. Suddenly, she was attacked by wilding youths. In the struggle against them, she changed into the Jaguar—a were-creature whose powers she had inherited through her family line. Before long, this shy college student would have to cope not only with fitting in at a big school, but also with cyborg killers, super-villains, and a math teacher who was secretly an agent for The Web.
