Destiny, characterized by Sandman writer Neil Gaiman as the most enigmatic of the seven Endless, is the catalyst for this three-issue mini-series. With the return of the bubonic plague threatening the survival of the human race at the beginning of the next millennium, the anxious remaining residents of a small town listen in desperation to the story of survival told by John Ryder.

Ryder appears at Ruth Knight’s farm with knowledge of the Book of Destiny and of the time when the plague ravaged the great city of Byzantium during the Middle Ages. Back then, another man named John arrived on a great white horse to confront the empress about the facts of his birth. He was one of four horsemen and brought with him more than accusations. He brought the plague. Now, John Ryder exhibits a special interest in the white horse owned by Ruth Knight…
