Marvelman was, essentially, a British rip-off of the original Captain Marvel. Sure, it was different in a few of the details: it’s Mickey Moran, not Billy Batson, who utters the magic word (”Kimota” rather than “SHAZAM!”), calling down atomic energy rather than mystic lightning, to transform into the mighty blue-clad (not red) Marvelman. But in all the important ways, from the lively C.C. Beck-inspired art to the fun and wild stories, Marvelman brought the spirit of one of the best characters of the Golden Age across the Atlantic to delight a generation of young British fans. When some of these kids like Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Barry Windsor-Smith and Dave McKean grew up in the 1980s, they paid tribute to their childhood favorite in a new series called Miracleman, published by Eclipse.
