All the Wrong Places
(Laszlo, 1998, 2001)
™ and ©1998 the respective creators
Poor Nathan lives virtually alone on the family farm, caring for his dying mother. He seldom gets visitors, except his friend Richard who brings groceries and keeps Nathan caught up on local news. There is also Jessica, with whom Nathan has fallen in love. Unfortunately, Jessica already has a boyfriend, who is due home from the Service soon.
On the surface, this 6-issue series by Tom Galambos seems nothing more than a brief glimpse, through the eyes of one sad young man, of small town life. Although that might be all there is to it, an undercurrent of suspense pervades the story, the title itself implying something bad occurs. The deliberate use of repetitive panels slows the pace, suggesting that something important is just about to happen. The reader is left suspecting that Nathan and Jessica’s friendship will progress, but that their relationship will not be a happy one.
