The Lone Gunmen

    (Dark Horse, 2001)
™ and ©2001 Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation

Just as the nerdy Lone Gunmen spun off of the Fox television show X-Files into their own short-lived TV series, here they spin off into their own one-shot comic. Writer Jane Espenson (also a producer and writer for TV’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer) perfectly mixes the show’s penchant for drama, humor, and, of course, conspiracy. And artist Paul Lee draws some of the most exact actor likenesses to ever appear in a media tie-in comic.

Our heroes, Langly, Frohike and Byers are manipulated by a survivalist group into revealing a way to disable all U.S. government computers and take over the country. When the Gunmen realize they’ve been duped, they must infiltrate the group’s HQ (a thinly-disguised “Big Lots” store) and use their technical know-how to save the day while fighting for their lives.

Not only is the main story fun, but this issue contains a hilarious one-page gag about the Gunmen’s classic Kirk vs. Picard debate.
