Lady Death first appeared in 1991’s Evil Ernie #1. Since that time, she has been using Ernie as her servant to help fill hell with souls. Up till now, however, there had been little to tell what drove her and who she was before she became the dark spirit she is today.

1993’s Lady Death three-issue mini-series finally tells the tale of how a young girl called Hope was betrayed by her father Matthias and was burned at the stake. In her dying breath, however, she forsook her humanity and shouted the incantation that would make her a mistress of hell. There, she did battle with her father’s spirit, even as he attempted to wrest control of it from its master, Lucifer. In the end, her sheer desire for revenge was such that she bested them both. Still, Lucifer cursed her that she would never walk the earth above as long as it was inhabited by the living. “So be it!” she declared, “If the living must die so that I may return to earth… then they will die!”
