David: The Shepherd’s Song

Christian comics and Christian creators have come a long way. More than 60 years ago, E.C. Comics produced its Picture Stories from the Bible, and, since then, the niche market has grown considerably. Alias Comics continues that tradition with the excellent David, The Shepherd’s Song, David’s Mighty Men, and a host of other titles.

King David is one of the Bible’s strongest characters, and Royden Lepp conveys his story effectively. The simple art and story work together to introduce David as a courageous, devoted shepherd. Utilizing a narrative framework in which David tells his story as an older man wishing for his relatively trouble-free youth, Royden is freed to give a sense of who David was.

I love the multi-page sequence where David battles the lion. Largely wordless, the panel flow is seamless and exhibits Lepp’s talent. Although the story is not new, this presentation is sure to be found in churches and kids’ collections.
