The Girl Who Would be Death
(Vertigo, 1998-1999)
™ and ©1999 DC Comics
Evangeline, Plath, and Billy were amateur occultists, playing with forces well beyond their abilities. When one of these episodes results in Billy’s death, Plath resolves to make Death release him. To that end, she contracts with a dealer of arcane artifacts for the Magdalene Grimore, the book of magic that Roderick Burgess used to trap Morpheus. Then she discovers that he also holds Death’s ankh and she obtains it too. But the ankh was meant for another, and Death is not one to be bartered with.
The mystique of Death, one of the Endless from Neil Gaiman’s Sandman, is so pervasive to the characters of this story that even though she makes no actual appearance, her influence and reputation is the de facto star of this mini-series.
— George Haberberger
