For many fans, Gail Simone and Udon’s run on Deadpool was far too brief, so this series was a welcome addition to Marvel’s X-line. A welcome return? Hard to say. You see, Sandi Brandberg was once Deadpool—Marvel’s mutant mercenary-with-a-mouth—and when a wounded amnesiac shows up in her building with X-shaped scars all over his body, she thinks he may be her former boss and sets him up as a mercenary in an effort to get her old job back, to rediscover her purpose in life. But she can’t do it all on her own, so she asks her boyfriend—who happens to be the Taskmaster, the best there is at all things spying and killing—to get Alex Hayden, the X-scarred amnesiac, up to snuff in his fight skills. Simone does an excellent job of developing the idea that Hayden could be Deadpool, but she leaves enough wiggle room to suggest that he’s not, giving the series an air of mystery. This is fun stuff from one of comics’ best writers, and it’s complimented by some gorgeous artwork from Udon Studios.
