Rumiko Takahashi’s Mermaid’s Dream weaves strands of mysticism and fantasy into a complex romantic adventure story set in feudal Japan. Yuta, a young man wandering the countryside, once ate the flesh of a mermaid and as a result has become immortal and impervious to harm. In his travels, he encounters Natsume, a girl with similar abilities, who travels with an old merchant. Together, the two embark on a journey across the country in search of their mysterious origins. Takahashi’s art is rendered in expressionistic brushstrokes, adding a stark undercurrent of drama to the story.
