The Heart of the Beast

    (Vertigo, 1994)
™ and ©1994 Dean Motter and Judith Dupre

What happens when you fall in love with the father of a monster? Sandra Phillips finds out in this stylish reinvention of the Frankenstein story set in New York’s art world and brought to life via pen-and-ink, paint, and photography. As the tale opens, pretentious Manhattanites are attending a gallery opening in Soho and taking in the ghoulish images from Dr. Andrew Wright’s vast collection. At this showing, bartender Sandra meets the mysterious Victor, who is a keeper of secrets, a bearer of scars, an owner of many strange medications, and an employee engaged in some unusual work for Dr. Wright. As Sandra delves deeper into Victor’s life, she falls in love, but is fearful of what she discovers. This gothic tale comes from DC’s Vertigo imprint, with writers Dean Motter (Mister X) and Judith Dupré, and artist Sean Phillips (Hellblazer).
