A-V in 3-D
(Aardvark-Vanaheim, 1984)
Characters are ™ and ©1984 by their respective creators
A-V in 3-D was a one-shot special designed to introduce new readers to Aardvark Vanaheim’s 1984 lineup. Aardvark-Vanaheim’s founder, Dave Sim, is the creator of the highly successful comic book series Cerebus the Aardvark. Among A-V’s other offerings were such worthwhile titles as Ms. Tree from Max Collins, Bob Burden’s Flaming Carrot, Valentino’s Normalman, Bill Messner-Loebs’ Journey, and Arn Saba’s Neil the Horse.
This special is an oddity for Aardvark-Vanaheim, which is known for their straightforward “no gimmicks” approach to comics publishing. In an attempt to boost sales and bring more readers into the Aardvark-Vanaheim stable, Publishers Deni Loubert and Sim made an exception and printed this special with a 3-D process. The effect (which was used in a similar line of books by Pacific Comics) can be quite striking at times, such as when illustrating the dream sequence found in the issue’s Cerebus story.
