Ray (ADV)
(ADV Manga, 2004-2005)
™ and © 2003 Akihito Yoshitomi
Well, you can’t say this one’s not different. A girl born at a body farm where children have their organs harvested has her eyes removed but is rescued and given a transplant which gives her X-ray vision. (To give you some idea of what the series is like: the doctor who performed the operation has black and white hair and is called “B.J.”—basically he’s a homage to Osamu Tezuka’s renegade doctor Black Jack.)
The girl follows in B.J.’s footsteps using her new power to heal without the benefit of a doctor’s license, dealing with cases that require her to be more miracle worker than doctor. (She transfers a kidney from one person to another in a dirty shack then follows up by performing two heart transplants in one day, single-handed.)
Still and all, Ray’s remarkably original (it shows Superman hasn’t been using his X-ray vision to its full potential) in script, art, and characters and it definitely leaves you wanting more.
— S.A. Bennett
