Beneath the Planet of the Apes
(Gold Key, 1970)
™ and ©1970 Apjac Productions, Inc. and Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation
From the early 1960s through the mid-80s, Gold Key adapted a seemingly random assortment of movies into one-shot comic titles. One of their finer efforts was 1970’s Beneath the Planet of the Apes, which illustrated the second of the successful Planet of the Apes films. Beneath the Planet of the Apes takes place in the same simian-dominated future Earth of the original Apes movie, with two twentieth-century astronauts and a native human girl trying to escape from brutal armies of talking gorillas and orangutan scientists who want to experiment on them. Their travels take them to the “forbidden zone,” where a cult of human mutants worships a nuclear warhead. The comic version comes with a bonus “Ape Protest Poster.”
