My Flesh is Cool

Like DC’s Deadman, Evan Knox has the ability to temporarily inhabit other living bodies and take control of that body’s actions. However, unlike Deadman, Knox acquires his powers artificially (via drugs), and Knox is hardly an arbiter of justice. Rather, he’s a cold-blooded assassin who kills for money. He’s not at all likable or sympathetic but he does make a compelling figure, given his prodigious powers and his willingness to use them ruthlessly.

Written by Steven Grant, who knows something about assassins (just ask The Punisher, a veritable Boy Scout compared to Knox), My Flesh Is Cool is, if you’ll forgive the obvious usage, a cool comic book. The storyline is intriguingly dark (Oliver Stone and Quentin Tarantino could make one heck of a film using this setup), movie dialogue is cleverly incorporated into the drug usage scene, and the gods of graphic narrative only know what will happen next issue.

Adding tremendously to the dark and dirty story is the art, which appears to be an inky, fever-induced take on Mike Grell mixed with a few other influences, including Kelley Jones (check out the wrinkled bed sheets and clothing).

So far, My Flesh Is Cool is a little rough around the edges, and there’s no particular character to root for, but it’s never boring.
