Eye of the Storm

Set in a not-so-distant future amidst the wreckage of a terrible war, this computer-assisted book reads like a script tacked onto a game of “Doom.” Action sequences are introduced with little explanation, amazing weapons are deployed at random, and broad social oddities are breezed over at will.

Although the future it depicts (deathsports, military bioweapons gone awry, and super-macho soldiers) may seem a bit trite to anyone who’s seen a science fiction movie or two, the title accomplishes what it sets out to do and is well complemented by the hyper-clean art. And though lacking in the social commentary and literary criticism that’s defined comics for the last decade, it does provide solid, sci-fi entertainment. At least it does for those who’ve played arcade games and wished for a deeper plot.
