Mahito Takeda is a high–school student who acts as a “big sister” to her frail cousin, Erika. When Mahito is killed by a hit–and–run driver, she is restored to life by a mysterious girl who calls herself a “median.” Mahito learns that medians are immortals living hidden among mankind. There is a secret war between two sects of medians: those who consider themselves superior to humans and use them sadistically as toys; and those with moral standards who are opposed to the perversions of the “fallen” medians. Mahito does not really want to get involved with either side, but she may be forced to for both her own sake and to protect Erika.

The “secret supernatural society coexisting with humans” is a popular horror subgenre. Sister Red presents an interesting variant, but it is developed too shallowly. Much seems like standard vampire lore with only superficial differences; there is no depth to the median’s society. Hayashiya’s art style is pleasant but it is often difficult to tell characters apart (especially with so many wearing school uniforms).
