Gyre: Traditions & Interruptions
(Abaculus, 1998)
™ and ©1998 Martin Shipp and Marc Laming
An immortal, armored woman considers the champion she will choose to safeguard humanity. A young man reflects on the mystical powers he has been given and his mission to protect and avenge “the souls of all those who died before their time.” A female assassin accepts a mission. What do these three events have to do with one another? It’s not obvious in this short, cryptic prelude to Gyre: Harmless Children’s Toy, but mysteries put forth here are interesting, especially when the armored woman muses, “This [champion] will be…one for whom the role will mean unique duties, to be executed in exceptional ways.” With a line like that, one wonders what will happen next.
This special was distributed at the 1998 San Diego Comic-Con as a preview to the ongoing Gyre series from Marc Laming and writer Martin Shipp.
