Doctor Hwen Mirage was a parapsychologist who thought he had stumbled across the find of a lifetime. In many ways he was all too right.

Along with his wife and associate Carmen Ruiz, Hwen was investigating the charred bodies of “Hook” and “Welt,” two of Master Darque’s operatives. Although the two had died in a propane explosion, the Darque force still inhabited their bodies. When Hwen and Carmen began doing dissections and tissue analyses, the bodies suddenly became animated and attacked them. Hwen and Carmen managed to stop them, and even traced the source of their power to Darque himself. They followed him from New Orleans to Ladakh where Darque had gone to steal the secrets of a dead geomancer. There Hwen confronted Darque, and seemingly lost his life in the process. But Hwen came back from beyond out of love for Carmen, even though he is now an incorporeal ghost!
