Asylum is an anthology showcase for the various titles published by Maximum Press. The first issue got things rolling with short stories including Larry Marder’s “Beanworld, Rob Liefeld’s “Avengelyne,” Rob Liefeld’s “Warchild,” Stephen Platt’s “Doubletap,” and the licensed science-fiction comic, “Battlestar Galactica.”

For a company that’s taken its shots as nothing more than a factory for cookie cutter super-heroes by draw-alike artists, Asylum displays a remarkable range of talent. Comic superstar Stephen Platt’s “Doubletap” is the first creator-owned character by the young artist. On the other hand, “Beanworld” is a humorous comic that had been published independently for years prior to its premiere at Image. The “Warchild” story focuses in on Merlyn and how she became a female. The Battlestar Galactica story introduces comic newcomers Rob Napton and John Fang. The series was edited by Matt Hawkins.
