The classic series Moonshadow, originally published under Marvel’s Epic line in 1985, reappeared as a Vertigo (DC) title a decade after its original release. Wisely, DC avoided tampering with the original work, and reprinted it unchanged with the exception of adding new cover art.
Although writer J.M. DeMatteis has gone on to become one of the most prolific scripters in the comics business, Moonshadow represents some of his finest and most inspired work. Working with watercolorist Jon J Muth, he created a “fairy tale for adults” about a young boy coming of age and losing his innocence. It’s an elaborate allegory disguised as space fantasy, wherein the boy Moonshadow seeks his destiny from his upbringing in a galactic insane asylum.
