Battleground
(Marvel, 1954-1957)
™ and ©1957 Official Magazine Corp.
During the Korean War and in the years following, Atlas Publishing churned out war comics at a rapid-fire clip. Some hit the mark, others were duds. Battleground tried to cover the bases by drawing its material from different wars—Korea, World War II, even the Civil War—which allowed them to re-tell the same standard set of war stories in different settings, and possibly fool a few readers into thinking it was somehow new, interesting, or creative. Added to this mixture was a rather thick smear of anti-Communist propaganda, typical of the time. Battleground was given its discharge from the Atlas lineup in 1957 during a general housecleaning of poorly-performing titles.
