The Wombles

Wombles are cute creatures of an indeterminate species that live in burrows in the Wimbledon countryside. They like to send their time picking up after the careless humans who litter their native soil. The plush stuffed animal version of a Womble appears to be mouse-like, but with longer fur and a pointed nose. This activity book featuring these popular children’s characters from England has illustrated stories, posed photos of the puppets, reader artwork, pages for coloring as well as counting and identification exercises.

Elisabeth Berseford created The Wombles in 1968 while walking along the Wimbledon countryside. One of her young children had trouble pronouncing “Wimbledon.” It came out “Womble” and thus an industry was born.
