Scary Godmother

Halloween is a thrilling night for kids, but for Hannah Marie this Halloween is especially exciting. It is the first time she will be going trick-or-treating with the big kids instead of her parents. However her cousin Jimmy, charged with her care, resents “babysitting” and the hindrance her presence is to his candy accumulation. He and his friends decide to take Hannah to a large empty house and tell her that she must leave candy as tribute to the hungry monsters. But Jimmy’s scheme to scare Hannah into wanting to go home did not take into account Hannah’s own special protector, her Scary Godmother.

This is a story that evokes the special naiveté of children (even those given to succumb to selfishness) and the triumph of innocence. Written and illustrated by Jill Thompson (Black Orchid, Sandman), Scary Godmother is a charming fantasy suitable for everyone, but perhaps most appropriate for parents to read to their preschoolers.
