You’ve got to give DC credit for owning up to this one directly without shunting it over to another imprint, because this story of a pair of brothers who go from avenging their father’s death to being professional killers and leg-breakers for a Jewish gangster in turn-of-the-century San Francisco really earns its “Suggested for Mature Readers” cover warning.

Because, along with the graphic violence, foul language, sex, and nudity, there’s that attention-getting cover image of a Star of David drawn in blood (which is likely to get DC attention it may not want).

Although we really don’t need another comic about stone killers, Winick pulls it off by never trying to excuse or justify their actions. He just tells their story, simply and directly, bringing his usual wit and attention to character to the gangster saga, while Dalrymple gives it a solid grounding in period detail that convinces.
