Milton Caniff’s Terry and the Pirates ran as a newspaper strip from 1935 to 1946 (and continued for years under other hands), blazing a trail so influential that it has to stand as the supreme achievement of sequential art in the 20th century. Young Terry and his mentor Pat Ryan set off for adventure in the Far East in 1935, encountering memorable characters like the Dragon Lady, and finding danger at every turn. Terry grew up, joined the Air Force, and fought valiantly against the Japanese in World War II. Characters loved, lost, and died as the nation waited breathlessly for each new episode.

Caniff’s cinematic approach to storytelling combined an effortless mastery of angle, shadow, and characterization with an uncanny sense of timing and composition. Scenes throbbed with drama and tension, and exploded in action and excitement. Will Eisner, Alex Toth, and Frank Miller among others drew obvious inspiration from Caniff’s work.
