The stars of Alvin and the Chipmunks were the creation of Ross Bagdasarian (1919-1972, known as David Seville), who built one 1958 novelty record, “The Chipmunk Song,” into an ongoing property, which included a 1961-62 primetime TV series and eventual Saturday-morning cartoons. He had initially performed all the parts (three chipmunks and himself). The comics appearances of his characters continued for several years, too.
