The world of 1950s and 1960s romance comics is one that may be lost to us forever. It was a world of wide-eyed innocence, where pliant young women pined away for dashing, adventurous men, and true love conquered over jealous rivals, personal flaws, family opposition, and harrowing circumstances. The fantasies of chaste, classless romance were rendered in clean lines and rote narrative. By the mid-1950s, the grit and realism of the early romance comics of Simon and Kirby had been burnished to a clean, glossy finish, and the range of products from the different publishers—DC, Charlton, ACG, Marvel—were all stultifyingly similar. My Romantic Adventures fits neatly into this mold, with a tinge of exotic adventure and foreign locales to spice up the usual plot devices.
