Archie Goodwin took over as Epic Comics’ editor in chief in the late eighties. Among the many projects he worked on was the revamping of the Alien Legion comics. In the second volume of stories, comic legend Chuck Dixon (Batman) handled scripting duties, with the well-regarded Larry Stroman working as penciler.

The goal in revamping the series was to make the characters a bit grittier and action-oriented than in their previous run. In addition, the second series featured more space battles in response to repeated requests from fans. One aspect of the series that did not change was the subplots which often dealt with racial issues and how so many different races manage (barely!) to co-exist in the same unit.
