The Outlaws (DC)

    (DC, 1991-1992)
™ and ©1991 DC Comics, Inc.

This series transfers the Robin Hood legend to a barbaric future. A corrupt king enslaves his own subjects and forces them to do hard labor, which often leads to their death. A man who calls himself Hood dedicates himself to thwarting the king and freeing the slaves. He’s got his reasons for hating the king. When the people in his village couldn’t raise their full tribute of grain and livestock, the king’s guards set the town on fire, and in the process killed most of Hood’s family.

His band of not-so-merry men includes Redbird, whose brother was burned to death for stealing a loaf of bread; a woman, Helion, who served as a child concubine to the corrupt Lord Conductor; deaf Tinker Tom, who was nearly killed by a drunken guardsman when he was only a few months old; Southpaw, who lost his right hand for courting a nobleman’s concubine; and Little Jess, an escaped slave.
