After an almost decade–long period of stagnation, Marvel came roaring back in the 21st century with a renewed sense of creativity. Many fans were caught unaware by this unexpected development and missed the start of some excellent new series. Prices for back issues quickly escalated if they were available at all due to Marvel’s policy of limiting the press run. Hence the appearance of Mighty Marvel Must Haves, reprinting first issues of the long–awaited origin of Wolverine and Startling Stories: Banner, a brutal look at the consequences of being the Hulk. Also featured was the chilling “Severance Package,” from Spider-Man’s Tangled Web.

Essentially a “greatest hits” title but with recent stories, this book is similar in concept to Marvel Milestone Edition, which also gave fans the chance to read stories that became significant but were difficult and expensive to obtain.
