The Lone Ranger’s Famous Horse Hi-Yo Silver
(Dell, 1952-1960)
™ and ©1959 the Lone Ranger, Inc.
The business of comics has certainly changed since the days of the 1950s. Back then, it was possible to sell a quarterly 32 page comic book devoted exclusively to the adventures of the Lone Ranger’s horse Silver—and sell enough copies to keep the title going for 8 years and over 30 issues. Yes, the Lone Ranger was the star of TV and radio. Yes, the Lone Ranger was a solid western action hero who sold a lot of comic books. But this is the Lone Ranger’s horse! And these are mostly solo adventures! Sample dialogue: Silver: “Wheeeeeee-hah-ha! Brrr-rr-rr-rtt!” Black Bandit: “Er-eeee! Eee-Awrrrh!” The masked rider of the plains makes an occasional appearance to set up the stories or deliver a hearty “Hi-Yo Silver—Away!,” but mostly this comic book features various horses running, fighting, and sniffing around a stereotypical western landscape.
