Piranese: The Prison Planet

    (Heavy Metal, 2004)
™ and © 2004 Milo Manara

Piranese is a planet where the criminals, outcasts, and other undesirables are exiled by the Empire. Once there, escape is impossible and even survival is uncertain. A tyrannical empire established a genetic modification program which is intended to eliminate aggression and cruelty, but obviously the existence of a prison planet attests to its shortcomings. A beautiful young woman lives on Piranese and somehow has avoided genetic manipulation and therefore the empire has no record of her bioscan. Her named is never mentioned although she is called Gorgeous and once even referred to as “Great Asparagus”! Whatever her name is, she is perceived to be a threat to the status quo.

The art in this title by erotic artist Milo Manara is its principal enticement. Scenes of partial nudity and sexual innuendo are sprinkled throughout the sparse narrative which leaves many unanswered questions. This volume, which ends rather abruptly, contains only part of the story of the young woman whose DNA is a threat to the empire but hints that her destiny will be messianic.
