Samurai Man
(Anime Works, 2005-2006)
™ and © 2002 Naoki Serizawa
Black and white graphic novel series; read right to left.
If this book wasn’t produced in Japan, readers would be labeling it a super-hero comic. It has “Man” in the title, a young protagonist, plenty of action, and super powers. Slip in some spiders into the first volume and a reader might almost confuse it for Ultimate Spider-Man, except Samurai Man is even more deliberately-paced.
During the quieter, less action-packed scenes, a reader might confuse the book for an episode of “One Tree Hill” as young Ryouma finds himself in a romantic triangle fighting rival basketball player Shizuka for the affection of Katsumi. But after a battle between two super-powered beings erupts around him, Ryouma suddenly finds himself sharing a body with King Shiyana, a powerful samurai entity.
