Blast-Off

    (Harvey, 1965)
™ and ©1965 Harvey Comic Publications

Harvey Comics, famous for Richie Rich and Casper, is not the first name that comes to mind when listing the premier publishers of science-fiction comics. However, the evidence indicates that when they did decide to publish one, such as the one-shot Blast-Off from 1965, they assembled some top-drawer comics talent on the project.

The lead story features the “Three Rocketeers,” a team of astronauts tangling with deadly alien menaces, illustrated in absolutely classic style by Jack Kirby. Other stories in the issue include a two-page Simon & Kirby fable, “Caution! Atoms!,” and two superbly drawn backups in the style of EC titles such as Weird Science, by EC veterans Al Williamson and Reed Crandall.
