Incredible Science Fiction

The Comics Magazine Association of America’s implemented the Comics Code, which forbade “all scenes of horror” in newsstand comics and altered possibly offensive titles. So Weird Science-Fantasy changed its name to Incredible Science Fiction, and each issue carried the Code seal. Famously, one story was challenged because fantastic birds in a jungle-planet setting were called satires on angels. And a reprint of “Judgment Day” was initially rejected because, it was claimed, it would offend black readers. E.C. ran both stories, despite pressures to change them. Incredible Science Fiction #33 (Jan 56) was E.C.’s last publication in color comic-book form.
