The Tick’s Golden Age Comic
(NEC, 2002)
™ and ©2002 Ben Edlund
In the grand tradition of the Golden Age of Comics, we are introduced to not only the origin of the Tick (Professor Jeffery Whitebread was struck by a radioactive meteorite and bolt of lightning while being sprayed by potent chemicals as he experimented on a secret formula being injected into a common wood tick which preceded to bite him as he accidentally uttered an ancient Egyptian incantation) but loyal readers get to see their bright blue hero as he and his loyal sidekick, Arthur, battle the evil Herr Comrade Doktor Skar and his mad plan to undermine the war effort by constructing automobiles with automated machinery instead of loyal American women.
So, what if the Tick, Arthur, and a few other super-types had been in the good old days of World War II or even the fifties? This series is a beautiful blast to the past as we see America’s favorite friendly neighborhood insect-based super-hero go about fighting evildoers in his own distinct style and still managing to come out on top.
